Artists of the Renaissance.

Overview:

Students will be assigned to groups of two, charged with choosing an artist on whom to focus a portion of a European Masters exhibit at the Boston Museum of Fine Art. This portion of the exhibit focuses on a single Renaissance artist. The students also be charged with convincing the museum curator that this artist deserves display in such an important exhibit.

Introduction:

Renaissance is French for “rebirth.” This refers to a renewed interest in classical art and learning that took place from the 1300′s through the 1500′s. This time period has produced some of the greatest artists ever known. Renaissance artists were greatly inspired by classical Greek and Roman artists.

Task:

Your assignment will be to research the art and achievements of one of the artists listed at the end of the “Process” section. You will compile a portfolio of 2 works you find worthy of display in the European Masters exhibit. Each work must be labeled with the artist’s name and the name of the painting or sculpture.

You will also deliver a five-minute presentation to a panel of your peers that shows why your chosen artist deserves a place in the exhibit. This presentation should mention, the artist’s influences, at least two areas in which the artist excels, and describe his or her impact.

Process:

Gather information: Use the links provided to find information on your artist. Take notes and download their works. You must include at two works. Keep the following questions in mind:

Was the artist influenced most by classical art, medieval art, or other Italian artists?

Did this artist use sculpture, painting, or both?

What were/was this artist’s most famous work(s)?

When did this artist live?

How was this artist particularly gifted or talented?

Organization: You should create an outline for your presentation with sections devoted to: Influences, Accomplishments, Talents, and Impact.
